Endless column inches and videotape minutes have been created this season to dissect the problems suffered by seven-time MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi as he struggles to cope with the challenges of riding various flavors of Ducati GP11.
We've read the front end is too stiff. We've heard Rossi is having trouble adjusting to the Bridgestone front tire on this bike. We've heard that Rossi needed to adjust his position on the bike. We're read about the incorporation of aluminum into the carbon chassis to make the bike more compliant for Rossi.
But has anyone mentioned that Valentino Rossi is 32 years old?
There's no question that Rossi's precise, smooth style requires more precision and feel than Ducati can deliver him with this bike. But Casey Stoner made it work at Ducati, winning 23 times in four seasons on a chassis that looked like a mustang trying to escape a corral on its best-handling days.
Many observers this year, including fellow Aussie World Champion Mick Doohan, have noted how Stoner grabbed the Ducati by the throat and did whatever it took to exorcise the evil out of it. Even if it meant checkers or wreckers.
