Two states say they are “finalizing” a major economic development deal with the same global tire manufacturer … which means one of those states is going to look pretty stupid in the not-too-distant future.
Or pretty smart … depending on the size of the taxpayer-funded incentives associated with this impending announcement.
But which state will “win” this deal? And how much money will its taxpayers have to shell out in order to claim “victory?”
The public portion of this particular command economic drama began last Thursday. That’s when sources at the S.C. Department of Commerce told us that “the next BMW” was coming to Sumter County , S.C. – that an announcement welcoming thousands of new jobs was imminent.
We were quickly able to confirm that the company in question was Continental AG – a German-based tire manufacturer that already has a presence in the state. Shortly thereafter, we were told that WLTX TV 19 (CBS – Columbia, S.C.) was on the verge of breaking the story – and that S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley was already arranging exclusive television interviews with the station for the early Monday morning.
